Chapter 3 - 'Beyond the Body Count'

Chapter title and phot analysis:

This photograph was taken by Bernard Edelman and shows quite a sad looking, lonely, depressed soldier sitting inside a dirty, wrinkly tent. I think that this image relates to the chapter title because as the chapter title is called ‘Beyond the Body Count’, and talks about killed and wounded soldiers, I would assume that this soldier is grieving for the loss of one of his squad members and/or good friends. I think that this photo would of been taken around the start/middle of the war based on where it has been placed in the book and the fact that this a time when the battles first started to become a lot more intense, bloody and a great number of soldiers were killed. This image makes me feel very sorry for this soldier as he would have had to endure things that I could never even imagine and also makes me feel grateful for what I have.

Chapter 5 - 'World of Hurt'

This photo was taken by Larry Burrows, and it shows a solider supporting and cradling a hurt Vietnamese civilian, who looks to be a young child. The child is crying and has its head and eyes covered with a bandage, and the solider is carrying them in his arms.

Chapter title and photo analysis:
This photo relates to the chapter title perfectly because, when someone called out “Medic” because they had blood spurting out of a part of their body, it meant that they were in a ‘World of Hurt’. So the picture of the injured civilian in the soldier’s arms relates to the title because the child would be in a world of hurt or pain.

I think this photo occurred in the middle of the war, when the American soldiers started to go into the villages and fight amongst the people.

This image makes me feel horrible, knowing that these poor innocent people (including children) had to live and try and survive amongst all this blood and terror. Even tiny little children like the one in this photo were killed and badly injured everyday as a result of this war.

Chapter 2: - 'Humping the Boonies'

Chapter title and photo analysis:

This photograph is taken by Larry Burrows. This photograph shows soldiers walking through a dense jungle with a heavy launcher type weapon. The soldiers face looks a little exhausted. The surrounding area looks very much like a humid weather area. This chapter is based around the start and early times of war. This image would have been taking not much longer after the war started.

This photograph makes me feel grateful that I didn’t have to live in these times, because I would be old enough to go to war, without having a choice.

Chapter 1 - 'Cherries: First Impressions'

Chapter title and phot analysis:

The photo taken by Larry Burrows that accompanies the first chapter entitled ‘Cherries: First Impressions.’ Shows three young boys arriving at Vietnam. A look of fear is instilled on their faces. One is carrying a flag the other two carrying guns.
The photo relates to the chapter title as they are “cherries” or “new recruits/newbs” arriving in Vietnam and getting their “first impressions" of not only the battlefield but also war and its casualties. I think the photo would have been taken in its early stages mainly because they look like they have a good idea of what they are about to face.

The image makes me feel bad, mainly at the fact a lot of young lives would have been lost.

Chapter 6 - 'What Am I Doing Here?'

Chapter title and photo analysis:

Mark Jury took the picture accompanying the chapter ‘What Am I Doing Here?’ The picture shows a close up of a shirtless solider holding a gun over his shoulder. The solider is wearing a helmet with a peace symbol engraved on it. The look on his face shows uncertainty ‘what am I doing here?’ which relates well with the chapter title. The picture may have taken at the middle to late stages of the soldiers service as he looks like his questioning why his still in Vietnam.  When I look at the picture it makes me feel for those who were conscripted to boost numbers and didn’t want to be in the War.

Chapter 1 - 'Cherries: First Impressions'

Chapter title and photo analysis:

The person who took the photo was Larry Burrows, the photo shows three young men barely past the age of twenty years old and you can see the fear they have on their face. The photo is related to the chapter “cherries”: a first impression because they are cherries (the new guys). The photo was taken at the beginning of the war because it shows cherries in the photo. The war was a bad thing to do between countries and I respect them for what they did.

Chapter 4 - 'Base Camp: War at the Rear'

Chapter title and photo analysis:

The fourth photo was taken by Mark Jury. It shows a man getting out of the medivac helicopter with a badly injured foot and going up to the hospital. It relates to the chapter by showing the doctors carrying the injured man on their shoulders. The doctors and nurses were the people fighting the ‘war at the rear’. This photo would be from the heat of the war, in the early to middle stages. This image shows me that the doctors were just as important in this war as the soldiers and one of America’s great advantages over the North Vietnamese with the good medical knowledge and facilities.

Chapter 8 - 'Last Letters'

Chapter title and photo analysis:

This photograph was taken by Larry Burrows, it shows two coffins and many soldiers in the background paying their respects. Both the coffins have the American flag laid across them. This photograph goes extremely well with the chapter title as it is about all the soldiers last letters that they had written before they finally got to go home. But most of them didn’t make it home, which shows in this picture. I think that this photograph was taken at the end of the war because they are burying soldiers. This image makes me extremely sad because so many soldiers lost their lives for others.

Chapter 7 - 'We Gotta Get Out of this Place'

Chapter title and photo analysis:

The photo was taken by the Defence Audio Visual Agency. It shows a soldier sitting with his head between his knees holding a Christmas card. It looks like he could be crying.  This picture relates to the chapter title because the soldiers really want to go home. Around special events such as Christmas it would make them emotional and want to be at home with their family so much more. I think this photo occurred towards the end of the war. The men have been away from home and family for a very long time and can’t wait to leave Vietnam and the war. This photo makes me upset. I can’t imagine spending Christmas without the people you love, let alone at war knowing that you might not be around next Christmas.

Chapter 2 - 'Humping the Boonies'

Chapter 2 - ‘Humping the Boonies’ Title and Photo Analysis

Chapter title and photo analysis:

This photograph was taken by Larry Burrows. It shows a trail of soldiers walking through a triple canopy jungle with bushes, trees, sticks and leaves in their way. The soldier leading the trail is holding a large weapon of some sort which looks dangerous, and also is carrying grenades that are attached to his belt. The chapter relates to this photograph because the soldiers are called ‘grunts’, and it gives everyone an idea of how hard they had it and the weapons the grunts had to carry and the types of conditions and tracks they had to walk for days through. I believe this was in the early stages of the book because it’s only the second chapter and they are just starting their war and trying to find Charlie. The soldiers look pretty tired and dirty already. It makes me feel concerned and sorry for them because they would be scared and new to it all, anything could happen to them.
