Chapter 1 - 'Cherries: First Impressions'

Chapter title and phot analysis:

The photo taken by Larry Burrows that accompanies the first chapter entitled ‘Cherries: First Impressions.’ Shows three young boys arriving at Vietnam. A look of fear is instilled on their faces. One is carrying a flag the other two carrying guns.
The photo relates to the chapter title as they are “cherries” or “new recruits/newbs” arriving in Vietnam and getting their “first impressions" of not only the battlefield but also war and its casualties. I think the photo would have been taken in its early stages mainly because they look like they have a good idea of what they are about to face.

The image makes me feel bad, mainly at the fact a lot of young lives would have been lost.
